Quick answers about electric vehicles
Clear answers about EV charging costs, kW versus kWh, range, home charging and tariffs.
How is electric vehicle consumption measured?
Consumption is commonly expressed in kWh/100 km. An input of 18 kWh/100 km means 36 kWh of battery energy for 200 km under the same assumed conditions.
Detailed guide →How much energy is needed to charge a 60 kWh battery from 20% to 80%?
The battery needs 60 × 0.60 = 36 kWh. If 10% of grid energy is lost, grid energy needed is 36 / 0.90 = 40 kWh.
Detailed guide →How do I calculate EV charging cost?
Energy cost is grid kWh multiplied by the unit price. Add session, time, idle, parking and allocated membership fees when applicable.
Detailed guide →How long does it take to receive 40 kWh at 7.4 kW?
At constant average grid power, 40 / 7.4 ≈ 5.4 hours. Vehicle limits, temperature, shared power and the charging curve can change actual time.
Detailed guide →What is the difference between kW and kWh?
kW is power: the rate of energy transfer. kWh is an amount of energy. A constant 7 kW for one hour corresponds to 7 kWh.
Detailed guide →How does AC charging differ from DC charging?
For AC charging, conversion occurs in the onboard charger; for DC charging, it occurs in the station. Actual power is limited by vehicle, station, charge level and temperature.
Detailed guide →How can I estimate electric vehicle range?
Estimated range is battery energy available / consumption × 100. For example, 48 kWh available and 17 kWh/100 km consumption gives approximately 282 km.
Detailed guide →Are WLTP and EPA range figures directly equivalent?
Figures from different test methods are not directly equivalent. Compare matching test cycles, model years, batteries and variants.
Detailed guide →How do I allocate a monthly charging membership per session?
Divide the monthly membership fee by expected monthly sessions. A fee of 50 units over 10 sessions means 5 units per session.
Detailed guide →Does every charging location on the map show live availability?
No. The map displays Open Charge Map records; live availability and prices are not connected across every network. Verify access, connectors and prices with the operator.
Detailed guide →Should I install a home charger myself?
Have a qualified professional assess the electrical supply before installation. Installation must follow the vehicle and charger instructions and applicable local requirements.
Detailed guide →Does Volts have detailed content in all 30 languages?
All 30 languages include 23 guides, six calculator pages, help and privacy information.
