AC or DC? Understanding charging
2 min read
QUICK ANSWER
With AC charging, the vehicle’s onboard charger converts alternating current to direct current. At a DC charger the conversion takes place in the station.
What to know
Actual power is limited by the vehicle, charger, state of charge and temperature. A powerful station does not guarantee that your vehicle will accept its rated power.
Planning and usage
Check connector compatibility. CCS, Type 2, CHAdeMO and NACS vary by market and vehicle. Follow manufacturer guidance for adapters.
Final checks
Charging power is not constant. Use a realistic average power in the calculator.
General information. Follow your vehicle and equipment manufacturer instructions.
